Martin Dsouza, KJ/DJ/Model
He talks to us about learning, breaking norms, girls, music and much more.
Martin Dsouza is not your average KJ/DJ – prior to changing career paths and following his passion, he worked for an esteemed advertising firm in Bangalore. He also modelled and acted for some internationally renowned brands such as Amazon, Canon, Kingfisher and Epson (to name a few), he writes in his spare time and is a partner for a digital company, BeamitLive, “India’s best live Internet TV network” and to top all of that off, he now hosts some of Bangalore’s craziest karaoke parties!
What we love about Martin is that he has broken one of the biggest occupational norms out there; he made a somewhat impulsive decision to make a change in his life, so he walked up to his manager and said, “I want to do things I love doing”, and quit! After that, he got into writing (poetry being his chief expertise), but now he’s completely enthralled by music.
What a guy: great music and a love for poetry – a desirable combination! If you’re already a fan of his and/or enthused after reading this, we can let you in on a secret: he is still single, girls!
So let’s not keep you waiting – we had a short chat with Martin who spoke about his learning curbs, breaking norms, girls, music and much more…
1. How has your journey been so far?
Martin: I won’t lie, it has been a rollercoaster ride, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it: I have learnt a lot throughout this journey and I have no complaints or regrets since the change. I hope it stays that way!
2. Any norm you have broken lately?
Martin: I guess I keep breaking them all the time, but the biggest one I’ve broken so far was to quit my stable job in an ad agency to follow my passion – writing and music! This was a big shocker, especially for my folks, but I just did it.
3. So tell us how modelling happened?
Martin: The first ad I ever did was 13 to 14 years ago, when I was in college. It was for a leading food brand and the ad was about Upma. Since then I have featured in quite a few ad campaigns and other modelling roles. As I have a lot more time, I go to a lot more castings these days than I did before.
4. Tell us about your style?
Martin: I know this might sound clichéd, but I wear whatever I feel comfortable in. I experiment a lot and enjoy wearing statement pieces – cool shoes and a nice watch (but not over doing it) – to pull my outfits together, and I never try to copy anyone else.
5. Current loving – music?
Martin: The current song I love and everyone is going gaga over is Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. I attended one of his concerts and I have to say I am a big fan!
The Horns by DJ Katch – it’s a fun peppy song which gets people going…
My all time favourite is Get Your Freak On by Missy Elliott. I like playing this at my gigs. At times I mix it with another track to bring out a new flavour.
Intoxicated by Robin Schulz. I love this song because it drops a beat and then it suddenly picks up and gets everyones attention.
Jungle Bae by Skrillex is another one I love.
6. Young advice for the millennials out there?
Don’t have any doubts or hold yourself back when following your passion. Initially it’s tough, especially financially, but you can get through it! You just have to crack that code within you – hard work and determination goes a long way!
7. Rapid Fire with Martin:
Fave Food – Desserts, ice creams especially
Fave Actor – Amir Khan
Fave Actress – Alia Batt
Partner Goals – I really need to connect with a woman and have conversations. A person’s hair and smile is also something that I notice.
8. Body Beautiful
Perfume you use – The Body Shop fragrances
Shampoo – Matrix
Face wash – Clean and Clear
Sunscreen – I really don’t take care of my skin, I really need to start though!
